The album lives in the bottom of the sideboard and it comes out about twice a year, and Rosa has been in the back of it for as long as she has been able to read.
It is one of those thick ones with the tissue paper between the pages. Her great-grandmother started it. There are people in the front of that book in stiff collars who nobody living has ever met, and then it comes forward through weddings and vans and a caravan in the rain, and somewhere near the end there is Rosa, aged four, in a paddling pool.
Rosa is fifteen now and reads herself as the afterthought. She would not put it like that. What she would say is that everybody else's story was already going by the time she turned up, and that is a thing that happens to a lot of last children and a lot of people generally.
Then the tissue paper tore.
They were looking for a picture of an aunt and the sheet between two pages near the front came apart in her mother's fingers, and behind it, stuck flat to the board and hidden for probably fifty years, was a folded piece of paper.
It was a list. Handwriting in pencil, very small. Names down the left in a column, and dates.
Her mother went quiet and then said, "That's Grandma's writing."
It was a list of names the family had used, going back. Not a family tree. A list of the names they liked, kept by a woman in the 1950s who was thinking about the ones who had not been born yet. There were little notes against some of them. This one for a girl. This was my mother's mother.
And about a third of the way down, in pencil, in a hand that had been under tissue paper since before her mother was born: Rosa.
Nobody had known it was there. Nobody had chosen it off that list; her parents picked it out of a book of names in a hospital shop in 2011 because they liked it.
Rosa sat on the floor of the front room with the paper in her hand and looked at her own name written by a woman who died in 1998, in a list made before anybody in that room existed, and something rearranged itself in her that she has not really got words for yet.
She had spent her whole life reading the album from the back.
You have been reading yourself off the back page too. Somewhere along the line you worked out that everything was already going by the time you arrived, that God's story got a long way without you, and that whatever you are now is a matter of catching up on payments. And nobody has ever torn the tissue paper and shown you the front of the book.

Scripture Calls You A Kind Of Firstfruits
There is a phrase in James that people skim because it is at the end of a sentence about something else.
"Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures."James 1:18
Sit with the two halves. Of his own will begat he us. Nobody applied. And then that phrase, that we should be a kind of firstfruits, which is the word this whole site is built around, and it is not describing something you hand over.
It is describing you.
You are being called the first thing here, not the thing charged for the first. James 1:18 puts a human being in the position the basket used to hold and never once puts a price beside it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a first century line and makes it land in somebody who has always sat near the back.
That is the reversal that runs through this whole subject and gets missed nearly every time. People think the first is what God takes. Scripture keeps saying the first is what God has. And when it applies the word to people it is never in the register of a levy. It is in the register of a name written at the front of a book by somebody who was thinking about you a long time before you turned up.
You were written down before you arrived, and the entry was made of His own will and not in response to anything. That is what the written word says about how you came to be His at all, and it is the Spirit of God who takes that from a doctrine you would nod at into a thing that rearranges an afternoon.
The Catch, Which Somebody Should Say Out Loud
Here is a fair question, and if you are the kind of person who asks it, you are in good company. What is this actually going to cost?
That is not cynicism. It is pattern recognition. Almost everything that arrives sounding this good has a second page.
So let me be plain, since the whole point of this site is that there is no second page. Nothing here asks you for anything. There is no figure in this article, no proportion, no percentage, no threshold, no practice you have been signed up to, no membership, and nothing routed to any person or cause or work anywhere, including this one. If you close the tab now, nothing changes about a single word of it.
And that is not a marketing decision. It is the actual logic of the verse. If a person is a kind of firstfruits, then the first in this arrangement is the person, and you cannot charge a person for being the thing itself.
You have not been enrolled in anything by reading this. It is written that the gift of God is not of works, so a page about origin genuinely can end without a request, and His Spirit is the one keeping this from quietly turning back into the thing somebody handed you years ago.
You are His without a transaction anywhere in the story, and the name in the pencil was already there. That is the written shape of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one holding the tissue paper open while you look.
Something can rearrange here, quietly, in whatever room this has found you in, and it costs you nothing at all.
You are not a late entry in your own life. Scripture puts you in the front of the book in a phrase that was written to be read by strangers, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that arrive as belonging rather than as a nice thought about James.
Two things this is not. It is not the opening of a scheme, and there is no second page anywhere behind it. And it is not a comment on what you have, because a name in pencil under tissue paper does not cost the person named a single thing, and if your hands are empty this morning the list reads exactly the same.
You have been on that list since before anybody in the room existed, and nobody has ever sent you an invoice for the ink. That is written, and His Spirit is the one who tore the paper today.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud. The standing to speak to God like this is yours in Christ and has nothing to do with when you arrived, Scripture is the ground under it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who opened the front of the book for you today. What He does next in your circumstances is His to decide, and none of these lines is a lever.
- Album I have been reading from the back, you had my name at the front the whole time. The word of God says that of His own will He brought us forth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures, and that is my name in the pencil and not my bill in the mail. I am reading myself off the right end of the book now.
- Sense of being the afterthought in my own story, get out of this front room, because the writing was under the tissue paper before anybody here was born. In the name of Jesus I put you down on the carpet, since what is written has Him choosing before the foundation of the world and never once charging for the entry. His Spirit is the one holding the page open while I say it.
- Father, You wrote me down of Your own will and nobody had to persuade You to do it. Your word calls me a kind of firstfruits, and Your Spirit is the one who tore the paper today and let me see it. I am first on Your list, and I am glad to say it out loud.
