Already His1 Corinthians 4:7

The Question That Emptied My Ledger

This message is for the man doing a stocktake of a workshop he inherited, who has been listing what he owes on it, and who is asked one question that empties the wrong column and fills the right one

Dan had been in the workshop since seven and it was now nearly two and he had filled four pages.

It was his uncle's workshop until March. Now it was his, in the way that a thing is yours when nobody has told you how any of it works. He was doing what he thought you were supposed to do, which was a proper stocktake, and he had ruled the pages into two columns before he started.

The left column was what the place needed. That column was going well. Rewire the back bench. The extraction is thirty years old. Two windows. The roof over the far corner, which he did not want to think about, so he wrote it small.

The right column was blank. The right column was supposed to be what the place was worth, and every time he went to write in it he ended up in the left one again.

By two o'clock the left column was four pages long and Dan was sitting on an upturned crate in a coat, feeling the particular tiredness of a man who has spent seven hours proving to himself that he is behind.

Gerry came in about half past. Gerry had worked in that shop for twenty-six years and had a key and had never once knocked.

He read the pages over Dan's shoulder without asking, which was also normal, and then he put the kettle on and said one thing.

"Where'd the lathe come from?"

Dan said he didn't know. Gerry told him. It came out of a school that closed in 1988 and it took four of them a whole Saturday and a borrowed trailer.

"And the vice?"

The vice came off a ship. The bench top was church pews. The little pillar drill was a wedding present from a man who was now dead. The set of taps in the drawer had come from Gerry's own father, and Gerry had put them in that drawer himself in 1997 and never said anything about it.

They went round the whole shop like that. It took forty minutes. Gerry did not once mention the roof.

And at the end of it Dan looked down at his four pages of what he owed, and then he looked up at a room in which not one single thing had originated with him, and something in his chest turned over.

He had spent seven hours filling in the wrong column. There was not one item in that building he had made. Every last thing in it had come in through a door, in somebody's hands, from somewhere.

You have been doing the same stocktake. Somewhere back down the line you started keeping a running total of what you owe God, and you have got very efficient at the left column, and you have not once in all that time gone round the room asking where the lathe came from.

The Question That Emptied My Ledger

One Question, And The Column Empties

Paul asks a question in a letter to a fractious church that had got competitive about which teacher they belonged to. It is not a gentle question. It is not meant to be.

"For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it?"1 Corinthians 4:7

Sit in the middle clause for a second. What hast thou that thou didst not receive. It is not rhetoric with a soft landing. Go round your own room the way Gerry went round that shop and try to find one item that did not come in through a door.

The hands. Received. The language you are reading this in, which somebody spoke over you for years before you could answer. Received. The heart doing its work behind your ribs at a rate you have never once had to think about. Received. The people who taught you a trade, a skill, a way of being in a room. Received. The morning. Received.

You are sitting in a shop full of things that arrived, and not one of them started with you. That is exactly what 1 Corinthians 4:7 puts to a whole room of people who were arguing about status, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a question written to settle a squabble and lands it in a man on an upturned crate with four pages of arrears.

And notice what the question does. It does not add anything to the left column. It empties it. A man in debt and a man in an inheritance are in exactly the same room holding exactly the same tools, and the only difference between them is which column they have been filling in.

You have been handed a life rather than billed for one. The written word puts the origin of every good thing on God's side from its very first sentence, and it is the Spirit of God who turns that from a doctrine you would agree with into something that changes the temperature of an afternoon.

Going Round The Room Out Loud

Here is the part that matters, and it is the part Gerry did without knowing he was doing it.

He said it out loud. He could have just thought about the lathe. He walked round a workshop naming where things came from, in a voice, in a cold room, and by the time he had finished the room had changed and neither of them had moved a single object.

That is what the oldest picture of the first in Scripture is actually for. A man carries a basket up to the place where God has put His name, and what he is required to do when he arrives is recite. Not hand over and go. Stand there and say out loud where his family came from and how they got out and who brought them. The basket is the occasion for a sentence. The sentence is the work.

You were given a mouth and a memory, and putting the two together over one ordinary object is the whole of it. Scripture is full of people naming places after what God did there, and it is the Holy Spirit who usually brings the origin of a thing to mind at the least convenient moment, halfway through the dishes, in a line, on a crate at two in the afternoon.

Now hear the guard on this, because a good thing goes bad exactly here. Nothing is being asked of you. Not a figure, not a fraction, not a habit, not a commitment, and there is nothing on this page routed to anybody, this work included. If you close this and never say a word out loud, you are exactly as much His as you were when you opened it, because that has never been what was holding you, and the same Spirit who brought you here is the one keeping this off the ground where rules grow.

The breakthrough

Something can turn over in your chest here, the way it turned over on that crate, and it does not cost you a thing to let it.

You are not behind with God. Scripture opens with a world nobody was invoiced for and never once revises that, and it is the Holy Spirit rather than a good mood who is making that arrive as relief instead of as a technicality.

Two things this is not. It is not step one of anything, and there is no step two waiting further down. And it is not a nudge about what you own or earn, because the question in 1 Corinthians 4 does not go anywhere near your resources; it goes to your origin, and a man with nothing in his pockets answers it exactly the same way as a man with everything in his.

You have received every single thing in that workshop, and the right column was full the entire time you were staring at the wrong one. That is what is written, and His Spirit is the one who walked you round it today.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud where you can hear yourself. The standing to speak to God like this was given to you in Christ and was never something you built, Scripture is the ground under it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brought you to this page today. What He does next in your circumstances is His to decide, and none of these lines is a lever.

  1. Workshop I have been counting up, you were handed to me and I did not build one wall of you. The word of God asks what I have that I did not receive, and I have gone round the room now and there is nothing in it that started with me. I am naming where every last thing came from.
  2. Column of arrears I have kept since March, get off my knee, because you were never the ledger I was supposed to be filling in. In the name of Jesus I close you, since what is written puts the origin of every good gift on God's side of the door. His Spirit is the one who turned the page over while I was sitting there.
  3. Father, You brought the lathe and the vice and the bench and the hands and I did not carry one of them in. Your word says everything I hold was received, and Your Spirit is the one who keeps showing me the door it came through. I received every bit of it from You, and I am glad to say it out loud.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
