The sofa is stuck on the turn of the stairs and has been for eleven minutes, and Bev's brother in law is on the top step saying the word pivot in a voice that is losing patience with the whole family.
There are two children under the table in the front room, in a fort made out of the boxes marked kitchen. The kettle went in first because the kettle always goes in first. Somebody has found four mugs and nobody has found the milk.
Bev is in the kitchen for a minute on her own, which is all she wants, leaning on a worktop that is now hers, in a house that smells of somebody else's washing powder and fresh paint over old paint.
And on the worktop, propped against the tiles where nobody could miss it, there is a school exercise book with an elastic band round it.
She opens it braced. She has been braced all week. Every place she has ever moved into has come with a list of what she is now responsible for, and the list is always longer than the one she was shown.
It is not that.
The boiler is from the spring of 2014 and my brother put it in for us, it wants bleeding in October. The tiles behind the stove came out of the old chapel when they cleared it, we could not let them go in a dumpster. The blind in the back bedroom was made by the woman at number twelve out of a curtain. The apple at the end was here before us and it fruits late, do not let anybody talk you into pruning it in the spring.
Page after page in careful handwriting, and Bev stands there and reads the whole thing, and it never once tells her what she owes. It only tells her where everything came from.
You have been told what you owe God. Somewhere along the line somebody worked out the figure for you, or implied it, and you have carried a low-grade sense of arrears ever since, the way a person carries a letter they have not opened. And in all of that, in all those years, nobody ever sat you down and told you where any of it came from. Not the work in your hands. Not the years. Not the strength you got up with this morning. You have been handed a bill and never once an origin, and something in you has gone quiet and careful around God because of it.

The Basket Was There So A Sentence Could Be Said
Let me show you the oldest picture of the first that Scripture has, because it is nothing like the thing that was handed to you.
A farmer takes some of the earliest fruit of his ground, puts it in a basket, and carries it to the place where God has put His name. So far it looks like a delivery. Then comes the part that is the whole point, and almost nobody is ever told about it.
He has to say something out loud.
He stands there and recites, and what he recites is not a report on his farming. It is a history. My father was a wandering Aramean, he says, and we went down and became a people, and it went badly for us, and we cried out, and God heard us, and He brought us out with a strong hand, and He brought us here and gave us this ground. And then, at the end of all that, one sentence about the basket.
"And behold, now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground, which you, O Lord, have given me."Deuteronomy 26:10
Read the last five words. Which you have given me. The basket is not the transaction. The basket is the occasion for a sentence, and the sentence is a man saying out loud where his life came from, in front of God, while holding the evidence in his two hands.
You are not in arrears with God. That is written into the oldest ceremony about firsts that exists, where a man arrives holding produce and leaves having said a history, and not one syllable of it is about what he has settled. It is His Spirit and not my opinion that turns that from a fact about an ancient farmer into something that loosens a grip in your own chest.
And look at the two men everybody quotes on this subject, because both of them are pictures of the same thing and neither of them is a rule.
Abram comes back from a fight and meets a priest-king who brings out bread and wine and blesses him, and it is only after the blessing that Abram hands anything over at all. The blessing came first and it came free. Jacob goes to sleep on a stone with nothing and dreams of a stairway, and in that dream God does all of the talking and all of the promising. What Jacob does when he wakes up is answer. Neither man was paying an invoice. Both of them were responding to somebody who had moved first.
You have received everything you are holding, and none of it started with you. That is not a debt being calculated, it is a fact being named, and it is the same fact the written word states from its first page onward. Nobody in Scripture is ever billed for the ground under them, and His Spirit is the one who makes a fact like that arrive as relief rather than as small print.
Naming It Takes Nothing Off You
Here is the thing that nobody says, and it is what this whole site is standing on.
Acknowledging where something came from does not reduce it. If somebody hands you a plate of food and you say thank you, the food is still there. There is the food, and there is the thank you. Nothing has been deducted. It is a sentence, and a sentence costs no more than the truth in it.
This is why the ceremony was built the way it was. God did not need the fruit. He owns the field, the rain, the man and the basket. What He asked for was a person standing upright and saying out loud where it came from, because a thing said out loud does something in the sayer that a thing merely known never does.
You have the standing to say it, right now, without preparing anything. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and it is written that from Him and through Him and to Him are all things, which means every true acknowledgment you make is agreeing with something already settled rather than proposing something new. The Spirit of God is the one who brings the origin of a thing to mind at all, usually while you are doing something ordinary with your hands.
And hear this plainly, because a good thing hardens into a bad one exactly here. This is not a rule and nobody is counting. There is no proportion in this article, no requirement, no practice you are being enrolled in, and nothing whatever routed to anybody, this site included. If you never say the sentence, you are no less His, and no shelf in heaven moves. It is offered to you because it is true and because it is a relief, and for no other reason at all.
Something can turn here, in whatever room this finds you in, and it costs you nothing to let it.
You are not behind with God. The written word puts the beginning of everything on His side of the table, and His Spirit is the one making that read as good news rather than as a technicality. The letter you have not opened was never an invoice. It was a note about where the apple tree came from.
Two things this is not. It is not the first step in a scheme, and there is no second step waiting further down this page. And it is not a suggestion about anything you own or hold or earn: nothing in this article asks you for a thing, and if your hands are empty this morning, the sentence is exactly as true and exactly as available to you as it is to anybody else. The origin of your life is not measured by what is currently in it.
What is offered is smaller and better than a scheme. It is the end of a bracing carried into every room where God was ever mentioned.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud with something in your hands. The standing to name God as the source of what you hold was given to you in Christ, Scripture is the ground under it, and His Spirit is the one who put the thought there in the first place. What He does next in your situation is His to decide, and none of this is a lever you have just pulled.
- Work of my two hands, you came out of God's hand first and saying so takes nothing off me. The word of God has a man holding a basket and saying which You have given me, and he walked home with his life intact and his origin named. I am holding what I have and I am naming where it came from.
- Bracing I do whenever God is mentioned, you can stop now, because there was never an invoice behind His back. In the name of Jesus I put you down, because Scripture shows a blessing arriving before Abram handed over anything at all, and it shows God doing all the promising while Jacob was asleep on a stone. I am not in arrears with the One who gave me the ground.
- Father, You gave the day, the strength and the hands, and You have never once sent me a bill for any of it. I thank You, because Your Spirit is the one who keeps showing me where things came from, and because You wanted a sentence said out loud rather than a debt settled. This came from You, and I am glad to say so.
