The Loaf The Baker Set Aside

This message is for the apprentice who has spent a year counting the loaf that never went into the basket, and who finds out it was never a loaf taken but a loaf that spoke for the whole batch

The bakehouse runs from one in the morning, and for the first three weeks Teo was too tired to ask about the loaf.

The rule was simple and nobody explained it. The first loaf off the first peel does not go in the basket. It goes on the wide stone sill beside the door, on a square of cloth, and it stays there.

Teo counted. He could not help it. One loaf a night, six nights a week, and he had worked out the year before he had finished his first month. He did not say anything, because he was nineteen and new and the flour got into everything, but he thought about it every single night while he slid the peel in.

It felt like a levy. Somebody, somewhere back down the line, had decided that the bakehouse owed a loaf, and the loaf came off the top, and nobody ever said who was collecting.

The night he finally asked, Brannan had his forearms in the trough and did not look up.

"Break it open," Brannan said.

"The sill one?"

"That one."

Teo went and got it. It had gone cool. He held it in both hands and pulled it apart the way you do, and the crumb opened up pale gold and even, and the steam that was left came out with it, and the smell of it filled the doorway.

"What do you see?" Brannan said.

"Bread."

"Look properly. Salt right? Crumb even? Did it rise the whole way or did it stall on one side?"

Teo looked properly. It had risen the whole way. The holes were small and regular. The crust had the right give.

"Then the batch is right," Brannan said, "and I know it before a single one of them goes out. That loaf is not a loaf I lost. That loaf is the only way I know what the other ninety are."

He wiped his hands and nodded at the sill.

"And it sits there because the street walks past at four in the morning. It tells them we are working. It tells them what is coming out of here today. It has never once been about giving a loaf away, lad. It is about the batch having something that speaks for it."

Teo stood in the doorway a long time with half a loaf in each hand, and the arithmetic he had been running for a year quietly closed itself and went away.

You have been handed a subtraction. Somebody worked out a figure on your behalf, or implied one hard enough that you filled it in yourself, and ever since then the subject of God and what is His has arrived in your chest as a small cold sum. A thing taken off the top. A loaf out of the basket. And in all that time nobody once broke the loaf open in front of you and showed you what it was actually for.

The Loaf The Baker Set Aside

The First Was Never A Subtraction

There is a sentence in Romans that has been read past for centuries because it is short and it sits in the middle of an argument about somebody else. Paul is talking about Israel, and he reaches for the bakehouse to do it.

"For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches."Romans 11:16

Read the direction of that sentence, because everything turns on it. The holiness does not travel from the lump into the firstfruit. It travels the other way. The first says what the whole is. It is a sample, not a slice off the top, and the entire point of it is what it tells you about everything it came out of.

You are looking at your own life the way Teo looked at that sill, counting a loss that was never a loss. Romans 11:16 puts the first and the lump on the same side of the ledger rather than on opposite sides, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a sentence about an ancient harvest and lands it in a chest that has been braced for years.

That is why the older ceremony works the way it does. A farmer walks a basket up to the place where God had put His name, and the thing he is required to do when he gets there is not to hand something over. It is to open his mouth and say where his people came from. The basket is the occasion. The sentence is the point.

You have received a life, and every part of it arrived from somewhere before it was ever yours to hold. That is not an accusation and it is not an invoice; it is the plainest thing the written word says about a human being, and it is the Spirit of God who makes a plain fact like that arrive in a person as relief instead of as small print.

What The Sill Is For

Brannan put the loaf where the street could see it. That detail is not decoration.

Acknowledgment has to be said somewhere it can be heard, and usually the person who most needs to hear it is the one saying it. A thing you merely know sits in you like a fact in a drawer. A thing you say out loud does something to the sayer. This is why every picture of the first in Scripture involves a mouth: a man reciting a history over a basket, a shepherd naming a place after what happened there, a poet telling his own soul to remember.

And here is what it costs. Nothing.

If somebody hands you a plate of food and you say thank you, there is still exactly as much food. The gratitude did not come off the plate. It is a sentence, and a sentence costs no more than the truth inside it. God does not need the loaf. He owns the field, the grain, the fire, the hands and the hour. What He asked for was a person standing upright and saying out loud where a life came from, because that sentence heals the person who says it.

You were given the standing to say it before you ever thought of saying it. It is written that of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, so every true acknowledgment you make is agreeing with something already settled rather than proposing something new, and His Spirit is usually the one who brings the origin of a thing to mind while your hands are busy with something ordinary.

And hear this plainly, because a good thing hardens into a bad one exactly here. Nothing on this page is a requirement. There is no proportion in it, no practice you have been enrolled in, no figure implied and nothing routed anywhere. You are no less His if you never say a word of it, and that is not a loophole but the actual shape of what Scripture says about how you came to belong to Him, with the Holy Spirit as the one who keeps the whole thing from curdling back into a rule.

The breakthrough

Something can close itself and go away here, the way the arithmetic went away in that doorway, and it costs you nothing at all to let it.

You are not in arrears with God. Scripture never once bills a person for the ground under their feet, and the same Spirit who moved over the deep before there was anything to charge for is the one making that read as good news rather than as a technicality.

Two things this is not. It is not step one of a scheme, and there is no step two further down. And it is not a hint about anything you own or earn: if your hands are empty this morning, every word of this is exactly as true and exactly as available to you, because the origin of a life is not measured by what is currently in it.

You have been His since before the batch went in the oven, and the loaf on the sill was only ever telling you so. That is what is written, and His Spirit is the one who put you in front of it today.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud with something of yours in your hands. The standing to name God as the source of what you hold is not something you worked up; it is yours in Christ, Scripture is the ground under it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put the thought in you before you read a line of this. What He does next in your circumstances is His to decide, and not one of these sentences is a lever.

  1. Batch of my whole life, you were spoken for by a first I never lost. The word of God says that if the firstfruit is holy the lump is holy too, so the sample on the sill was telling the truth about all of me. I am holding what I have and naming where it came from.
  2. Arithmetic of arrears I have run for years, get off my table, because there was never a sum there to total. In the name of Jesus I put you down and I am not picking you up again, since Scripture bills no one for the ground under their feet. His Spirit is the one who keeps that fact warm in me.
  3. Father, You set the loaf on the sill before I had worked a single night in this bakehouse. Your word says all things are of You and through You, and Your Spirit is the one who keeps showing me the origin of things while my hands are busy. This came out of Your hand, and I am glad to say so out loud.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
