The Coffee Before The Kitchen Fills

This message is for the grandfather in a house of nine who has twenty minutes before the kitchen fills, and who has been treating that time as a gap to endure rather than as the one part of the day that is a beginning

There are nine people in Ignacio's house and eleven when his sister's family is over, and there is one kettle and one bathroom that works properly, and the whole thing runs on a timetable nobody wrote down.

He is up at ten past six. Not by choice, originally. He worked forty-one years and his body will not stop.

For the first two years after he stopped work, he hated that twenty minutes. It was too early to be useful and too late to go back to sleep and he would sit in the kitchen with a coffee feeling faintly like a spare part in a house he owns.

Then his granddaughter Xiomara, who was six at the time and is now fourteen and mostly a mystery to him, started coming down.

She would appear at about twenty past six in a blanket and sit on the other chair and say almost nothing, and drink milk, and go back up before the house properly started.

They did that most mornings for about four years. They almost never talked. She says now that it was the best part of her childhood, which he finds completely bewildering, because nothing happened in it.

What changed for him, and he did not notice it at the time, is that once there was somebody else in the room he stopped experiencing that twenty minutes as a gap.

And once he stopped experiencing it as a gap he started, at some point he cannot date, saying something to God before he drank the coffee. Not a prayer with a shape. One line. Sometimes two. Sometimes the name of one of the nine.

He is seventy-three now and Xiomara does not come down any more, and he still does it, and he says the difference between that twenty minutes and the rest of the day is not that it is quiet. He says the house is quiet in the middle of the afternoon as well.

The difference is that it is the beginning. Everything after it comes after it. That is all.

You may have no room. You may have no quiet, no chair, no twenty minutes, and a life with more people in it than there is space for. And somewhere in the middle of all that you have concluded that the first hour belongs to people with a different kind of house, and nobody has ever pointed out that a beginning is a position and not a length.

The Coffee Before The Kitchen Fills

Morning And Night, And Nothing In Between About Length

There is a line in a psalm written for a specific day of the week that is almost entirely about timing, and has nothing at all to say about duration.

"To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night."Psalm 92:2

Morning and night. That is the whole architecture. Something said at the front of the day and something said at the back of it, and the psalm does not once specify how long either takes or what has to be in it.

The lovingkindness goes in the morning. That is a deliberate pairing. The morning gets the kindness, because the morning is where a person needs to be told something before the day tells them things. The night gets the faithfulness, because at night you are looking back at whether it held.

You have been handed a shape you can actually keep in a full house. Psalm 92 puts a sentence at each end of a day and never once asks for the middle, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a temple song and lands it in a kitchen with one kettle and nine people upstairs.

And it is the same grammar as the first everywhere else in Scripture. The earliest fruit of a harvest is not the largest fruit; it is the one that comes before the rest. Twenty minutes is not a small retreat. It is a first position, and the entire value of it is that everything else in the day comes after it.

You were never asked for a length, only for a place in the order. That is what the written word means by the morning every time it uses it, and it is the Spirit of God who makes that arrive as something possible rather than as something for other people.

A Household Is Not An Obstacle

Now the part that people with quiet houses get wrong about people with loud ones.

The nine are not in the way of this. Ignacio's twenty minutes is not valuable because the nine are asleep. It is valuable because it is first, and what he says in it is very often about them.

That matters, because the version of this subject that gets sold assumes a person with a study, a candle and no dependants. And the reader who has none of those quietly concludes that they are doing a reduced version of a Christian life, which is not true and has never been true and is not what any of these psalms are describing.

You are not running an inferior version of anything. It is written that He gently leads those that are with young, which is a sentence about a God who has taken the shape of an actual household into account, and His Spirit is the one who is in the room before anybody else comes down.

And say the guard, because this exact seam is where a small good thing becomes a burden. Nothing on this page is a requirement. No length is named, no hour, no habit you are being signed up for, no chair, no book, and nothing routed to anybody at all. If tomorrow the house wakes early and the twenty minutes never happens, you are as fully His at seven with all nine of them in the kitchen, that is the written shape of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one keeping this from becoming a standard.

The breakthrough

Something can settle here, in a loud house or a quiet one, and it costs you nothing at all.

You have not been doing a lesser version of this. Scripture asks for the front of a day and never once asks for a room, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that arrive as dignity rather than as an exemption.

Two things this is not. It is not the beginning of a scheme, and there is no second part further down. And it is not a hint about getting up earlier, because Ignacio's twenty minutes exists because his body will not sleep and not because he is disciplined, and if your day starts with somebody shouting for a shoe, the first is wherever you first speak.

You are the beginning of something every single morning, and the order of it is genuinely yours. That is written, and His Spirit is the one who has been in that kitchen before you every day of it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in whatever room you are standing in. The standing to speak to God like this is yours in Christ and does not depend on having quiet or space, Scripture is the ground under it, and the Holy Spirit is the one in the kitchen before anybody comes down. What He does next in your circumstances is His to decide, and none of these lines is a lever.

  1. Twenty minutes before this house wakes up, you were never a gap to get through. The word of God says to show forth His lovingkindness in the morning and His faithfulness at night, and it does not name one single length anywhere in that sentence. I am putting Him at the front of this and letting everything else come after.
  2. Idea that a proper version of this needs a room I do not have, get out of my kitchen, because a beginning is a position and not a length. In the name of Jesus I put you down by the kettle, since what is written has Him gently leading those with young and never once handing out a smaller portion to a full house. His Spirit is in this room before any of the nine come down.
  3. Father, You are here at ten past six with one kettle and eleven people asleep upstairs. Your word puts Your lovingkindness in the morning, and Your Spirit is the one who has sat in this kitchen with me since long before I noticed. Your kindness in the morning, and I am glad to say so out loud.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
